The wind blew through the rafters and the old structure creaked as the force shook it to it’s very foundations.
Hiding in the dark, huddled together for warmth and a protection that we couldn’t honestly offer each other, we sat and waited for the end to come.
The stairs creaked again and we smelt it.

Bookworm, they had called Laura at school, her nose perennially buried in musty tomes. “Knowledge is riches,” she always told them.
Today, she was finishing her favorite author’s latest novel, borrowed from the public library. As she flipped to the last page, a ticket slipped out and fluttered to the floor.
Tomorrow, she’s a multi-millionaire.

He sat alone, eyes closed to the squalor around him. Smoke slowly passed between his lips. Straining to hear beyond the electric fan, he listened for the rhythm that lay deep within himself, the rhythm that drove his own heartbeat.
At last, he picked up his pen and wrote down what he heard.

He’s been blogging for a year now. He loved his blog, wrote every post multiple times until it was perfect. Still no visitors, comments or emails. He decided to stop blogging.
Then, one day it happened. Someone left a comment.

John raced through the hospital’s front door. How would they pay the bills, with no savings and his job a day old? No matter, they’ll scrape through and the baby will be worth it.
In the maternity ward, he took one look at Sheryl and the two bundles on her arms, and fainted dead away.

“Alright. Had a crappy week. Simply because I’ve missed you eventhough I know I shouldn’t.”
A long pause before he softly said,
“I missed you, too.”

At four he dreamed of one day being right here: his toe, the game, the hopes of the team and fans - all on the line.
At twelve, when he grew seven inches over the summer, that dream became a possibility.
Now, at nineteen, countless drills, shots, scrimmages, bruises, all condense into a single, fluid motion.

The rats of the mansion called an emergency meeting.
“Sixth infant killed since yesterday”
“How?”
“These youngsters keep teasing the cats, got to find a solution for this”
“Easy. Stop them from watching Tom and Jerry on TV, you don’t get away teasing cats like Jerry does. It happens only on TV”

Daughter: Mum, is it my fault I haven’t found love?
Mum: No, sweetheart. It’s nobody’s fault. These things take time.
Daughter: It’s just that I sometimes believe it’s a curse.
Mum: Like you’re carrying your parents’ sins?
Daughter: Well, yea. Specifically Dad’s.
Mum: Okay, you can blame your father then.
Never ask a scorned wife.
