Into the Mist

I could barely keep my teeth from chattering. The bonfire burning across the courtyard did nothing to keep me warm. My eyelids drooped under the weight of the third watch.

Suddenly, a man was standing in front of me, rifle drawn. I fumbled for the hammer, praying he hadn’t yet seen me.

I was wrong.
