Third and Long. The master decided to avert attention from the pass play everyone expected. Blue. 64. Blue. 64. Hike. Three step drop, then bending back, he pumped a throw, but instead handing to Edgerrin. The back dashed left, then right and found a hole to the left. Finally tackled. 16 yard gain. First down.

Janice pulled the box from her closet. “Treasured Nights” it read on top. Inside were ticket stubs and pressed flowers. She pulled each item out of the box and thought back to the night she received them.
‘Those were the days,’ she thought as she closed the lid and placed the box in the trash.

The Tower

The Tower

This story from Jeffrey Pyne is his second submission to 55 fiction. Thank you for the story, Jeffrey.
Once upon a fairytale, she sat in her golden tower.
“Rapunzel,” said the prince as he clanked to a halt and looked up at her beauty, “let down your hair!”
She gave an embarrassed cough “I shaved it off last week.”
And Prince Charming’s plaintive cries echoed across the realm “Has anyone got a ladder?”

Shadow

Shadow

He paused behind an old circus booth, listening for the sound of running feet. He debated whether to wait for back-up and risk the fugitive’s escape, or pursue the wanted man.
He drew his gun and saw a shadowy figure do the same. He fired in self-preservation.
The trick mirror shattered into a million pieces.

Paperwork

Paperwork

Bob peered at the mountain of files in front of him. Reams of paper – an entire forest felled just to feed his queue. He tried to remember whether or not his desk had a faux wood grain. He seemed to remember oak.
Bob sighed. “At least I’ve got job security,” and he grabbed his pen.

Alone in the Cold

Alone in the Cold

The spaceship collided with space debris, setting it seriously off-course. Through the porthole, Major Riker watched as the planet receded from his view.
“Major, re-burn the rockets to correct your course. We will talk you through the revised re-entry procedure.”
On the ship, nothing came through the damaged communications system as Riker waited in vain.

Starting To Hurt

Starting To Hurt

From up here everything looks so much smaller. The world which closed around me every day, smothering me and choking my very will looks so much less threatening, almost peaceful. I have to gather myself.
I close my eyes and step off the ledge.
It’s a long way down on this one way ticket.

Luke and the Cupboard

Luke and the Cupboard

Luke spied the gleaming handle from across the kitchen, and made for it as fast as he could crawl. Pulling himself to his feet, he studied the object.
Reaching out, fingers locking around the piece of curved metal, he gave a mighty pull, and the door opened. A treasure of pots and pans awaited him.

Philosophically speaking…

Philosophically speaking…

I was explaining philosophy to my friend.
“The sum total of all life in this world is constant, so an increase in the number of human beings would have definitely resulted in the decrease in the number of one or more species (animals)”
“Hmmm”, said he, “that explains your existence”

It Comes Naturally

It Comes Naturally

She stares at it nervously. Unsure of what to do and how to act. You can’t really learn it in any textbook or take up a course. There’s simply no formula for it.
But reaching out and touching that little hand, melted her heart. She knew then she’ll make it as a mum.
