Road Block

Explosions echoed off nearby buildings. The Humvee roared down the street slowing for nothing. Rounding a corner Sgt. Markos saw an obstacle. The road was blocked by the burnt-out shell of a minibus. Standing in front four small children held weapons.
Pressing down on the accelerator, Markos left the threat and his soul behind.

Paid!

The day had come. The one I’d been waiting for the last 20 years. I’d done it! I’d broken into the ranks of paid writers. The check had come in the mail. Slowly I sliced open the envelope and pulled out the check. One cent! I laughed. I start small.

Broken Bread
