Luke and the Duckies

Luke rubs his tired eyes as he wanders aimlessly around the living room. On his way past the couch his attention is ensnared by a soft and snuggly trap. Yellow ducks smile at him from a fleecy field of turquoise.
“Duckies!”
“Ni’ night!” he cries running for the stairs with his blanket under his arm.

Dinner Dilemma

“We can’t.”
“We must.”
“If we do, we will have nothing. We will eat today and tomorrow, and then what? What will we do when the meat is gone?”
“But if we don’t, we may not see next week, much less cheese or calves. We must look after today… and hope tomorrow can be changed.”

Beyond Limits

“Is he…”
“Yeah. He’s dead.”
“Oh my god. Did you…”
“Yeah. It was that damn smile in his eyes.”
“I’m gonna be sick.”
“He never said he did it. I asked him about Jeanne, and he didn’t say a thing. But his eyes… that damn smile. Didn’t think I could do it until I did.”

Rebellion

Tim paused the game and set the Wiimote on the couch next to him. His stomach rumbled like Old Faithful in those old cartoons. He thought back on the day. Nothing unusual… just the salad bar with his folks before they left from the campus visit.
*****
His bowels rebelled: “Aahhh!!! Vitamins and minerals… Run away!”

Important Considerations

This submission comes from Michelle. Thanks Michelle!
As he jumped in front of the bus, you would have thought he would be thinking about all the unbearable things in his life, which had driven him to the act. For Example his unpaid mortgage, cheating girlfriend, and loveless parents, but that was behind him. His […]

Happy Friday

She wondered, as the last dishes crashed to the floor, how she would pay for all sixteen settings, the auto mechanic and the roofers. She decided to worry later, figuring there would be plenty of time to work out a solution while recovering from the fractures no doubt sustained while knocking over the display cabinet.

Repaired

“Thank heavens! I didn’t know what I was going to do about tomorrow’s party.”
“Couple screws left is all. There… I’ll turn the power back on, and you can test it.”
*****
“Sandy, Johnny’s cake is amazing! I’ll be asking you for help with Derek’s sixth next month.”
“Thank you, though I didn’t do it alone…”

Life Reconsidered

Hope everyone enjoyed the Easter Holiday. Back to the stories this week…
Frank sipped the cup of stale, tepid coffee and considered what he was doing. He thought about that tiny, newborn girl and her beautiful mother, starting life over with nothing. It broke him. Laying a handful of change on the counter, he returned to […]

Sleepless Nights

Pete’s heart nearly gave out when the door flew open. Too many sleepless nights hiding in fear had frayed his nerves. Adrenaline surged through his veins…
Only it wasn’t the police. It was a familiar woman’s face. As she told them what had happened that morning, Pete’s eyes widened. “What do you mean it’s empty?”

A Good Night’s Sleep

Joseph woke late from his first night’s sleep since Friday’s execution. The city was buzzing with gossip. He was still groggy, but finally at peace. He barely noticed the attendant hurrying into the room.
With each word whispered into his ear, the corners of his mouth fell in disbelief. “What do you mean it’s empty?”
