A Silent Farewell

He dressed silently in the pre-dawn gloom. He wanted to stay longer, but duty called. His leave was over, and he would be flying out in a few hours.

He kissed her lightly on the forehead and whispered, “I love you.” Still asleep she turned over, pulled the blanket to her chin, and smiled faintly.
