The Hatching

The Hatching

Through chill winds and soaking rains the drab, mottled bird held her ground, guarding her expected brood from the changing elements. Though her stomach growled, her commitment to her instinctive task did not waiver.
Beneath her, a small movement and a quite muffled tapping meant it was time to go and find food at last.

Spring Thaw

Spring Thaw

The stream, churning and nearly bursting its banks with the onslaught of mountain snow, punctuated the crisp March air. Unaware of the eyes that followed them endless waves of humpies fought the current tirelessly on their upstream quest. With a great splash the young Kodiaks hopped into the frigid stream looking for a hearty lunch.

Hungry Like the Wolf

Hungry Like the Wolf

One winter Wolf visited his friend, Fox. “Can you spare some food?” asked Wolf.
“No,” said Fox. “I can spare nothing.”
Wolf was angry. He decided to eat Fox. He began chasing Fox.
But Fox was crafty, and he lured Wolf into a trap.
Wolf fell into a deep pit and was never seen again.

The Mouse

The Mouse

In the moonlight the mouse inched from its burrow. The wind stirred dry leaves and carried the scent of food…
and a screech owl!
In frantic spurts, the mouse followed the airy trail to a recently harvested wheat field. Filling its cheeks the mouse raced home, only too aware of how close death had flown.

Luke and the Dog

Luke and the Dog

The animal was as tall as Luke, and it roared out in a lone, deep call before leaping onto the blue couch in a single step. Luke was awed. Wobbling over, he gently lay his head on the animal’s soft shoulder and wrapped his arms halfway around its barrel chest.
“Who’s that?” I asked.
“En-reeee!!!!”

Crumbs Under the Table

This was clearly Buddy’s favorite time of year. There weren’t as many smells outside, but the house was an explosion of scents. Other humans came frequently, and Mrs. was always cooking something for them. Buddy was a master at “sad eyes,” so he always got extra nibbles.
The doorbell rang, and Buddy began to drool.

Predator

Predator

The gazelle’s every muscle flexed. She was prepared should her alarm be justified. Only her ears moved, turning this way and that, straining to hear any evidence of danger in the long, dry grass. Minutes passed. And nothing.
Slowly the doe lowered her head to drink, and the crocodile shut his jaws on her neck.

The Frog

The Frog

“Just do it!”
Dan was nearly screaming as I stood there frozen. I felt eyes making wagers. “Will she or won’t she?” they asked.
My stomach churned. My throat was dry. A bead of sweat rolled down my nose. I grabbed the frog and inserted the probe.
Dan awoke to a chorus of laughter.

The Stare Down

The Stare Down

She fixed her gaze on the strange creature. Of all the smells she knew this wasn’t one. The hair on her nape stood on end.
Muscles taught, she waited for the thing to attack. She would be brave; she would defend her territory.
Suddenly, the squirrel darted over the fence disappearing into the woods.

Reel Real Life

The rats of the mansion called an emergency meeting.
“Sixth infant killed since yesterday”
“How?”
“These youngsters keep teasing the cats, got to find a solution for this”
“Easy. Stop them from watching Tom and Jerry on TV, you don’t get away teasing cats like Jerry does. It happens only on TV”
