Mark couldn’t believe what was happening. Instead of reading at the end of the bench like always, he was playing kickball. “Stupid influenza!” he thought.
The entire fourth grade watched as he stood on home plate. The infield moved closer. The pitcher began his wind up…
RING!!!
Mark smiled as he ran back to class.

“It’s time…”
“Really?”
“Yep. I’ve got ‘em all right here.”
“Cool! I’ll grab the matches.”
—
“How high do you think they’ll get?”
“Way high…”
“Way high… This is gonna be awesome!”
“Totally awesome.”
—
“So, is that it, then?”
“Guess so.”
“Bummer.”
“Bummer.”
“What do you wanna do now?”
“Go home I guess.”
“Cool.”
“Later.”
“Later.”

Startled, I arose and stumbled into the den of our old home. Earlier that winter I had given up, but the sounds above me rekindling my dreams. Amidst a muffled cacophony I heard one rafter after another creak and moan. With a crash the red-suited man landed before me in a pile of debris.

Billy pouted. The trip to grandpa’s house was canceled, because a storm was coming. Scanning the eastern horizon, however, he saw nothing but blue skies.
No trip… and no snow to play in.
Billy drooped his head and sighed. Looking up he saw the winter’s first snowflakes flutter past, and his eyes twinkled with delight.

This is for my daughter, whose birthday was this past weekend.
For the first time today there was silence. The party favors had been trashed or sent home with guests. The cake and ice cream were put away. The music had stopped, and so had the vacuum. Exhausted, I collapsed on the couch and closed my […]

Granddad crunched through the field at peace in the silence of the thick blanket of snow. Turning home he crossed through the thin line of trees on the property line. Two steps into the yard a war cry erupted. Snowballs whizzed around him.
Granddad had forgotten that the grandkids were coming over for the afternoon.

Luke wasn’t as interested as Daddy in the electronic beep coming from the table.

Daddy was scarcely aware of Luke as he crawled between his feet.

Fresh snow crunched beneath Luke’s boots on his unsteady circuit around the yard. Suddenly, the ground gave way, and he tumbled forward plunging his hands into the powder. Cold shot through his arms, and as he struggled to stand tears welled up.
Maybe mom was right. Maybe mittens weren’t such a bad idea after all.

The animal was as tall as Luke, and it roared out in a lone, deep call before leaping onto the blue couch in a single step. Luke was awed. Wobbling over, he gently lay his head on the animal’s soft shoulder and wrapped his arms halfway around its barrel chest.
“Who’s that?” I asked.
“En-reeee!!!!”

Sounds of what could be easily mistaken for elephant polo rumbled up the stairwell and into the darkened bedroom. Mom imagined the dreadful state of things: dishes to ceiling, half-eaten sandwiches lurking under the couch; untold toys strewn about.
She rolled over, her stomach dandy, determined to extend her respite just a little longer.
