A Snowball’s Chance

Granddad crunched through the field at peace in the silence of the thick blanket of snow. Turning home he crossed through the thin line of trees on the property line. Two steps into the yard a war cry erupted. Snowballs whizzed around him.
Granddad had forgotten that the grandkids were coming over for the afternoon.

25 Hour Flu

Sounds of what could be easily mistaken for elephant polo rumbled up the stairwell and into the darkened bedroom. Mom imagined the dreadful state of things: dishes to ceiling, half-eaten sandwiches lurking under the couch; untold toys strewn about.

The Holiday Dilemma

“What if we put the couch over my the bookcase and the recliner by the window.”
“No, I want the tree in front of the window. Can we put the couch under the family pictures?”

Luminary Amnesia

Thanks Kerri for another wonderful Christmas story!
Excitedly, she lugged the crate of decorations up from the basement and set it on the coffetable. In her mind, she could see the brilliance of last year’s tree—the ornaments, the ribbon, the presents underneath. As she unveiled the adornments for this year, she groaned. The Tower

This story from Jeffrey Pyne is his second submission to 55 fiction. Thank you for the story, Jeffrey.
Once upon a fairytale, she sat in her golden tower.
“Rapunzel,” said the prince as he clanked to a halt and looked up at her beauty, “let down your hair!”
She gave an embarrassed cough “I shaved it off […]

Dominoes

199,992. 199,993. They got more and more excited. They had been working on this for months. The goal was to get 200,000 dominoes stacked. The most ever.
199,999.
Tim carefully placed the second to last domino. Excitedly he reached for the 200,00th, but in his rush he knocked one over, setting off the chain.
