As I drove up the road a little voice inside my head kept asking me why did I keep coming back here and I had no answer for it. Sometimes there are things that men do that they can’t explain even to themselves and this was definitely one of those no explanation times.

A long day lost in the identical streets of a new city where they wandered around trying to find somewhere they could lie down together safely. The rumble of the subway coincided with the rumble of their empty stomachs as they joined hands and held each other.

Real life was a bitter shock, the fears and frustrations borne of a pampered generation finally forced to take a bite of the real world.

Fourteen years of relative silence had all led him back to this moment. The faint murmur of the expectant crowd reached him as he stood backstage and took a last sip of water and one final deep breath to steady his nerves.
Stepping on stage he wondered why he’d waited so long to come back.

So much work, so much physical work, carrying the materials to build their dream home, raising a family, feeding them and protecting them from those who would do them harm and it was all for nothing.
The homeowners had blocked up their entry to the nest this year again.

The smell grew as they sat on the stairs and waited for sunlight, wholly oblivious to the fact that in their hiding place they couldn’t tell whether it was day or night or neither.
One by one the children fell asleep as the smell grew stronger and daylight inched closer and never came.

CLICK. My rifle jammed and my heart began to pound sending cold sweat down my back and a blinding pain into my head. The man across the courtyard turned to look at me and I realised that my time here was almost up.
The smoke from the bonfire rose steadily into the still night sky.

From up here everything looks so much smaller. The world which closed around me every day, smothering me and choking my very will looks so much less threatening, almost peaceful. I have to gather myself.
I close my eyes and step off the ledge.

She held her baby close as the rain crashed against the window of their dark house. The storm was gathering force and as she saw the waves crashing against the cliffs and breaking on the shore, she knew that he wasn’t coming home this time.
Her tears wet her baby’s head as he slept.

When all you want to do is lie there and slip back into the nothingness of that unconscious dreamworld there is nothing quite like the incessant whine of an alarm clock to bring you around.
So the makers tell me, I find the off button on mine let’s me drift back there anytime I want.
