A Moment in Time

She stepped through the doorway and into her own time. All seemed normal.
Out on the road, she stopped a man riding by. He pulled his horse short, got off, and quickly lowered his eyes. “Yes, ma’am.”
“Which way to Jamestown?”
“Beg your pardon, ma’am. I’ve not heard of Jamestown. The closest settlement is Anneborough.”

Low on fuel but millions of miles from the nearest base, Brazzk had only one chance in 247 Earth years. Below, Gwarsl directed him to the exact location for the jump.
The moment came and the portal opened. Brazzk’s spacecraft was hurtled at light speed towards the sun, to stop 5 miles from its surface.

Final transmission from Pathfinder: “As requested, I examined red dust, and rocks, which was very tedious if I am being honest. Being sent to the middle of the galaxy to explore space would have been exciting; instead, you sent me to a place that looks like rural Oklahoma. Thanks. And no, there isn’t water here.”

Hidden in the fog, the attackers’ headquarters had lain undetected for centuries.
Brazzk and Gwarsl launched the weapon at the precise moment of Neptune’s alignment with the Earth.
Far away, the attackers turned their missiles on the nearest aircraft. One by one, they fell, while the airplanes made by men sat silent on the ground.

Exhausted, Brazzk stumbled on the frozen surface. His journey to its metal core had almost killed him. But in his hand was the only weapon that could destroy Earth’s attackers.
Gwarsl watched him with burning hatred. He turned his ship.
Code dictated that he help the creature who had saved his life. So he did.

Brazzk was stunned at his discovery. The attempts at securing the solar system had failed.
Thousands of spacecraft surrounded the planet, waiting for the signal to attack. They’ve been well hidden in the chunks of rock and ice making up the planet’s rings. At the signal, the rings exploded outward, sending the attackers toward Earth.

“Look at this, Daddy,” the little girl took a step closer to a newly opened temporal rift. “What is it?”
“Stay away from that. Precious. Be very careful.”
He turned to check that she was listening to him but by then it was already too late. The yawning void of time swallowed them both whole.

The winds from the Great Red Spot swirled around the alien. His commander had sent him to destroy the enemy scouts that patrolled this solar system.
He saw one approach. He moved toward it and failed to see the missile launched by the other scout.
Fatally wounded, the alien sank deep inside the gaseous planet.

Gwarsl fumed at Brazzk’s narrow escape. He hid in the sand dunes, knowing that Brazzk will pass through the red planet. This time, he planned to use a heat-seeking missile.
Brazzk’s craft flew near a towering mountain. Gwarsl unleashed the missile. It narrowly missed its target and continued straight into the crater of Olympus Mons.

Weakened but alive, Brazzk entered the blue planet, looking for a suitable being to nurture him. He found a creature whose biology was hospitable to his needs. He planned to be a symbiont only for a short time.
Unfortunately, the duck was sick and could not tolerate hosting him. Brazzk barely escaped with his life.
