The bullet passed through the soldier’s chest, decorating the linoleum floor in a fine, maroon speckle. Time momentarily froze as the tranquility of a routine patrol was shattered by the silent death of a sniper rifle.
CRACK! came the rifle shot, and every man in the room took cover, smearing the delicate pattern of blood.

“Dr. Carpenter, you’re late.”
“Some moron in a blue Mercedes cut me off on my way here. On his phone, not paying any attention. What’s the emergency?”
“Hit and run. Seven year old victim. Here’s the father.”
“Sir–” Before Dr. Carpenter stood the driver of a blue Mercedes, panic and anger mixed in his eyes.

At long last the kids were quiet, and Mark had finished enough tasks that he felt justified going to bed. Midnight had long past, and soon someone would be asking, “Daddy, what’s for breakfast?”
Closing his eyes, he felt thankful for today and overwhelmed at the prospect of tomorrow. He had never imagined parenting alone.

“We can’t.”
“We must.”
“If we do, we will have nothing. We will eat today and tomorrow, and then what? What will we do when the meat is gone?”
“But if we don’t, we may not see next week, much less cheese or calves. We must look after today… and hope tomorrow can be changed.”

“Is he…”
“Yeah. He’s dead.”
“Oh my god. Did you…”
“Yeah. It was that damn smile in his eyes.”
“I’m gonna be sick.”
“He never said he did it. I asked him about Jeanne, and he didn’t say a thing. But his eyes… that damn smile. Didn’t think I could do it until I did.”

“I can’t!”
“Look, it’s not a big deal. It’s not like it’s far away or a real hardship. These things happen.”
“I know! You’re not helping!”
“Seriously… calm down. You’re being completely unreasonable.”
“Damn it! I know I’m being unreasonable! If I could help it I could.”
“We can buy another TV remote.”

It was finally time. The most glorious moment in sports had finally arrived. The Tipoff for March Madness. Nearly 24 solid hours of basketball would be crammed into the next two days.

The soldier died, felled by a bullet through his chest. He never saw the man who shot him. One hundred seventy days into his deployment, and he’d never fired his weapon. Had he not died instantly, he might have taken solace in the fact that his brothers in arms were now alert to the ambush.

“Bryan Theodore Kramer, this court is appalled by your existence. Not only have you shown no remorse whatsoever, rather you seemed to enjoy hearing the graphic testimony of your wife’s horrific murder. I saw the satisfaction as you relived each terrible moment.
“Therefore, I have no hesitation in sentencing you to death.
“Court is adjourned.”
