Welcome to 55fiction

by Christina on March 17th, 2006

Welcome to the 55fiction blog.

This blog is our space within b5media where we will entertain you with works of fiction, but with a twist - each of the stories will be just 55 words (or less) long.

Why only 55 words? Well, its like asking “why bonsai”? or “why haiku?” Humans have always been fascinated by things that are too small or too big. This is an attempt to create fiction that is too small.

55fiction was invented by a magazine, The New Times. Every year they conduct a contest which attracts hundreds of entries. They have published two books so far, containing the winning entries.

These are some of the rules to keep in mind while writing a 55 fiction story (source: The New Times)

  • A story is a story only if it contains the following four elements: 1) a setting; 2) a character or characters; 3) conflict; and 4) resolution.
  • All stories have to be happening someplace, which means they have to have a setting of some kind, even if it’s the other side of the universe, the inner reaches of someone’s mind, or just the house next-door.
  • Characters can have infinite variations. People, animals, clouds, microbes. Anything.
  • In the course of the story, something has to happen. The lovers argue. The deer flees. The astronauts wait in anticipation.
  • Story’s title isn’t included in the word count. But remember that it can’t be more than seven words long.
  • Any punctuation is allowed, and no punctuation marks count as words.

For a complete list of rules, check out The New Times page. We’ll wait for you here :)

Done? Grab your favourite flavour of coffee and enjoy the stories.
